Different programmers

I have a 08 and I'm saving up for egr and dpf deletes, with that being said I know I'll need a programmer. I've been looking around and I've been looking at the mini maxx, smarty and bully dog. I know mostly about the mini maxx because I have a few buddies with it so my real question is how is the bully dog any different. I know they look the same because they are made of the same parts but I want to know the real difference about them. I have also been looking at smarty products, I just want to know if you can shift on the fly with them and a sort of dummy guide on how they work.
