AirDog Fuel Flow - PreFilter?

A discussion came up in the 2nd Gen 24 Valve section regarding a fuel filter installed between the tank and the input fitting on the AirDog.

It's said that this filter should prevent debris in the tank from being sucked up into the AirDog pump and damaging it.

Section 9 of the installation manual indicates that getting debris in the Gerotor Assembly is a concern.

However, the diagram earlier in the manual here indicates that the PreFilter/Water separator is before the pump assembly.

I find it really hard to believe that I'm ever gonna suck up particles big enough to jam up the pump, blow the fuse, and drop fuel pressure to 0 instantly... The worst that's going to happen is the particles will wear the pump down slowly and I won't notice it.

So, how often should I take apart the pump to clean it out?
How big of particles are we talking about getting through the PreFilter/Water separator?
Should I consider adding a small, disposable filter in front of the AirDog?
