Early 80's Chevy Cummins, registration problems?

Hey everybody, I'm going to be starting a new project here pretty soon, and working out all the kinks before i get started, so here goes. My project is to set a 81-87 Chevy K30 body onto a 94-99 dodge 2500 long bed w/ a cummins 12v.

Now the last thing im trying to figure out, is how would I go about registering this in California for driving? I do want to keep this legal, so no VIN changes etc. Would it be registered as a 94-99 dodge because thats the frame/backbone of the whole thing? Or the 81-87 Chevy because thats what the entire thing looks like? Or would I just buy the 94-99 dodge, register it as that, and go to town doing the body swap and just dont report it to the DMV? Im guessing that way wouldnt be too smart if i got pulled over...

Id rather not call the DMV because they never seem to give straight answers about things like this. Ive heard call the BAR people, or talk to a CHP officer as well. I have CHP officer as friends and could talk to them about it.

It would just drive me nuts to do all that work to find out I couldn't drive it legally :P
